Jebel Shams Weather and What to Pack

At roughly 3,009 metres, Jebel Shams is Oman's highest mountain, so the weather is cooler than the coast — days are cool and winter nights can drop near freezing. October to March is the most comfortable time to visit, and warm layers are essential for canyon evenings.

Cool mountain air and clear skies over Jebel Shams

What the mountain is like

Jebel Shams rises to 3,009 metres — the highest point in Oman — in the Hajar Mountains of Al Dakhiliyah. Because of the altitude, the resort is cooler than the lowlands and the coast, and the sky has almost no light pollution, making it a favourite for stargazing. The Oman Grand Canyon, whose cliffs drop more than a thousand metres, is steps from the resort.

When to go

October to March offers the most comfortable mountain weather. Days are cool and clear, while winter nights can drop near freezing — so bring warm layers whenever you come in the cooler months. For a forecast closer to your dates, ask the resort team.

What to pack

Pack warm layers for the evenings and early mornings — even when Muscat is warm, the mountain is cold after sunset. Sturdy shoes are useful for the Balcony Walk (W6) trail and the canyon viewpoint. After a day on the trail, the resort's outdoor swimming pool, canyon-view restaurant and campfire area are waiting; rooms include air conditioning, and the Private Chalet even has its own fire pit.
